MVP — Minimum Viable Product
| Net Burn Rate

Your idea may be an app, a product, or a service you hope people will buy. Your first question is simpler:
THE QUESTION THAT MOVES YOUR IDEA FORWARD
Who has a specific problem and is willing to pay to solve it?
This guide helps you reach your first paying customer, deliver what you promised, and use the results to decide what comes next.
You can follow the steps independently. If you get stuck on pricing, costs, or organizing delivery, ask Kayan for support at that point, then keep moving.
Our example is a service that helps small restaurants calculate dish costs and identify waste, which may later become subscription software. The figures and targets are illustrative starting points; adapt them to your business.
Tick off actions as you read. Progress lasts for this visit and is not sent to Kayan.
Choose one customer and one problem
A startup searches for a repeatable, scalable business model. Your first step is focused: a specific customer segment and a problem you can test.
Founder–Market Fit asks whether you have experience with the problem, access to customers, or the ability to learn what you are missing. In our example, experience in accounting or restaurant operations can help you understand the problem and reach restaurant owners.
Your action checklist
COPY AND ADAPT
Hi [Name], I am researching how small restaurants calculate the cost of their dishes. Would you have 10 minutes to discuss your current process and the difficulties you face?
DECISION GATE
If you cannot identify people you can reach, narrow your customer segment or change your approach before developing the solution.
Collect evidence of the problem
Ask about real events, rather than only asking whether someone likes your idea.
Your action checklist
| Customer | Last occurrence | Impact | Current solution | Paying to solve it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Name] | [Real example] | [Time / cost / error] | [Method] | [Yes / no / unknown] |
DECISION GATE
A starting threshold for this example: 6 out of 10 customers describe the same problem with concrete examples, and 3 agree to discuss a pilot. This is a way to organize your test, not statistical proof of a market. If answers remain vague, revisit the problem or customer segment before spending on development.
Design a small pilot you can sell
An MVP — Minimum Viable Product is the simplest version that delivers real value and tests an important assumption.
You can start with a Concierge MVP: deliver the service manually to a few customers, then learn what is worth automating. In our example, you collect purchase invoices and recipes for five dishes, calculate costs in Excel, and deliver a report with a discussion of the results.
Pre-selling means agreeing a purchase before the service or product is complete. Explain what exists, what you will deliver, when, and the payment and refund terms. Do not present an unfinished solution as ready.
Your action checklist
ONE-PAGE OFFER TEMPLATE
Who is it for? Small restaurants that need to update their dish costs.
What do we deliver? Cost calculations for five dishes using the restaurant’s data, plus a session to explain the results.
What do we need? Recipes, quantities, and purchase prices.
Delivery: [Number] days after receiving complete data.
Price and payment: [Total, upfront amount, and amount due on delivery].
Scope: [What is included and what requires a separate agreement].
If delivery is not possible or the order is cancelled: [Clear, agreed terms].
DECISION GATE
Offer the pilot for sale once you can clearly specify the deliverable, cost, and timeline. If you do not know how to fulfil the promise, reduce the scope first.
Sell directly and collect your first payment
Go-to-Market is your plan for reaching the right customers and turning your offer into sales. Start with a simple path: direct outreach, a short conversation, a clear offer, then agreement and payment.
Your action checklist
SALES MESSAGE — COPY AND ADAPT
Hi [Name], I am offering a limited pilot to calculate the costs of five dishes using your purchase prices and recipes, with a session to explain the results. If this is a priority for you, would a short call work so I can walk you through the scope and price?
WRITTEN AGREEMENT — COPY AND ADAPT
Hi [Name], to confirm our agreement: we will provide [service and deliverables] for a total of [amount and currency]. The upfront payment is [amount], credited against the total, and the balance is due at [date or milestone].
Work begins after [receipt of payment and required data], with delivery within [timeframe]. The price includes [scope and number of revisions, if applicable]. Any additions will be agreed separately. Cancellation and refund terms: [terms].
Please confirm your acceptance of these details before we begin.
YOUR FIRST MILESTONE
One customer has paid for a clearly defined scope of work. An upfront payment is a stronger signal than a promise, but does not prove satisfaction or willingness to renew. Complete the test by delivering the service and reviewing the outcome together.
DECISION GATE
If you have no sale after 20 outreach attempts and 5 substantive sales conversations, review the reasons. Is the problem urgent? Are you speaking to the decision-maker? Is the value or price unclear? Change one element and test again.
Deliver your promise and learn
The first sale shows that someone is willing to pay. Delivery tests whether you can provide value repeatedly.
Your action checklist
Now begin watching for Product–Market Fit: repeat usage, repeat purchases, renewals, and referrals.
DECISION GATE
Aim to deliver successfully to 3 paying customers before increasing marketing spend. This provides initial learning; it does not, on its own, establish product–market fit.
Check whether the economics work
Before expanding, understand four numbers:
| Term | Question it answers | Starting calculation |
|---|---|---|
| CAC Customer Acquisition Cost | What did it cost to acquire a customer? | Acquisition costs ÷ new customers generated |
| LTV Lifetime Value | What value do you expect over the relationship? | For a simple subscription model: monthly revenue × gross margin × expected customer lifetime |
| Net Burn Rate | How quickly is cash being used? | Operating cash payments minus operating cash receipts |
| Runway | How long will available cash last? | Available cash ÷ monthly net burn, when net burn is positive |
If you spend JOD 300 to acquire 3 customers, CAC is JOD 100, provided all relevant costs are included. Do not treat your own time as free when assessing scalability.
LTV is an uncertain estimate at the beginning. Do not assume that a customer will stay for years because they have purchased once.
To build the 13-week weekly cash forecast referenced in the checklist below, see How to build a 13-week cash flow forecast that management can actually use.
Your action checklist
DECISION GATE
If each sale consumes more resources than it covers, adjust the price, scope, or delivery method before scaling. Any deliberate loss during a pilot needs a spending limit and a review date.
30 days to a first sale. Then 60 days to test repeatability.
These are planning targets for an idea that can be tested quickly. Your product and sales cycle may require a different timeframe.
If you miss a target, use the evidence to identify what needs to change. Do not move to the next stage simply because the scheduled period has ended.
Terms for expansion and investment
Return to this section after your first pilot. Market sizing can still be useful early when a decision requires significant investment or an expensive product build.
TAM / SAM / SOM
The total potential market; the part your solution can serve; and the part you can realistically win within a defined period.
Bootstrapping
Funding the business through the founders’ resources and the revenue it generates.
Pre-seed / Seed / Series A
Common funding-round labels, broadly progressing from testing and development to expansion. Their boundaries vary, and they are not mandatory stages.
SAFE
An agreement giving an investor a right to future equity under specified terms in return for funding today.
Term Sheet
A summary of proposed investment terms. Whether particular clauses are binding depends on the wording and applicable law.
Cap Table
A record of shares and ownership percentages, also tracking options and instruments that may convert into equity.
Dilution
A reduction in your ownership percentage when new shares are issued.
YC — Y Combinator
A startup investor and accelerator that developed the SAFE.
When you receive an actual investment offer, understand its effect on ownership and rights with the appropriate professional support before signing.
